Vitamin D Deficiency

Siemens is pleased to announce the availability of our standardized ADVIA Centaur® Vitamin D Total assay1 to align with the ID-LC/MS/MS 25(OH) vitamin D Reference Method Procedure (RMP). The RMP is a reference procedure of the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements (NIH ODS) Vitamin D Standardization Program (VDSP), an initiative to standardize 25(OH) vitamin D measurement across methods and manufacturers. Currently available outside the United States, the revised ADVIA Centaur Vitamin D Total assay will enhance accuracy and reliability, providing clinicians and patients with a clear understanding of their results.

Globally, over 1 billion people are vitamin D deficient2 , and deficiency rates have increased as people have limited their sun exposure due to the risk of skin cancer. Vitamin D deficiency has long been associated with rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and long-term insufficiency of calcium and vitamin D leads to osteoporosis. However, in recent years, vitamin D has become an indicator of general health status, and there have been multiple publications linking vitamin D deficiency to several disease states, such as cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases3. This, in turn, has led to more commercially available automated vitamin D assays. However, since there has not been a universal vitamin D standard, different vitamin D assays and methods produced varying results, raising the need for standardization among manufacturers and assays. Vitamin D standardization is necessary to create the anchor vitamin D values need.

Laboratories can now meet the demands of increased vitamin D testing and have confidence in consistent and clinically accurate patient results by consolidating their testing on a fully automated, high-throughput immunoassay system. Features of the ADVIA Centaur Vitamin D Total assay include:

- Total measurement of 25(OH) vitamin D2 and D3

- Fast turnaround time – XP: 18 minutes

- Traceability to ID-LC/MS/MS 25(OH) vitamin D RMP

- Broad dynamic assay range – 4.2 – 150 ng/mL

- Now available with pediatric reference ranges
